ANGELS CAMP — Sierra’s cross country team has always taken the “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish” approach, so with that in mind head coach Anthony Chapman isn’t overly concerned with how his Timberwolves fared in the first of three Valley Oak League cluster meets at Frogtown Thursday.

Both Sierra’s boys and girls teams went 7-1 in the dual-scored meet, with each losing only to Sonora. Full meet results were unavailable as of press time.

The boys were edged by Sonora 27-29 on the 3.1-mile course, which gives them hope going forward. Ceres senior Alejandro Garcia won the boys race, and Sierra teammates John Bowers and sophomore Ricky Morris followed at 2 and 3.

Bowers clocked in at 17 minutes, 1 second, and Morris checked in 13 seconds later. Kyle Furtado (17:50) also turned in a top-10 finish, while Jonathan Scherry and Andrew Gulbronson accounted for the rest of Sierra’s points.

“There were a lot of things that could have changed in that race that would have gone in our favor,” Chapman said. “But we feel like we can compete with Sonora.

“We have more chances, so it’s not like we’re done, and we ran with them on their course. We’re definitely disappointed with the loss, obviously, but we can make up some ground.”

The distance was greater between Sierra and Sonora in the girls race, with the Wildcats winning, 22-35, while going 1-2-3-4.

Sierra’s Jenny Goulart (22:07) and Amber Parker (22:18) followed the lead back in order. Kaitlyn Carbiner, Frances Scherry and Analisa Honour rounded out the rest of the team.

“Sonora is very loaded on the front end, while ours are bunched up closer together,” Chapman said. “An invitational style of scoring works to our advantage there, so hopefully we can close in on them by the time we get to the league (championships).”

The second meet will be on Oct. 14 at Woodward Reservoir.
