Ruby Elizabeth Schmalek
February 2, 1923-June 15, 2013

Ruby Elizabeth Schmalek passed away on Saturday June 15, 2013 in Danville, CA at the age of  90.  Ruby was born on February 2, 1923, with her twin Beulah, in Chicago, IL.
She graduated from Senn High School in Chicago and moved to California shortly after graduation.  Ruby began working at the Alameda Naval Air Station during World War II and was an original “Rosie the Riveter.”  She was responsible for wiring airplanes manufactured during the war and used her petite size to fit into the smallest of spaces within the planes.  She often spoke fondly of these days and was proud of  her service.  Ruby met her husband, Ed Schmalek, while working at the Alameda Naval Air Station and was married after the war.  She gave birth to a loving daughter, Judie Mulvihill, and raised her family in the Bay Area.  Ruby worked at the Merritt Bakery for many years where she performed a variety of jobs and most lovingly created front window displays for all the holiday occasions.  She knew her displays were well received when the front window of the Merritt Bakery was full of children’s hand prints.  She retired from the bakery and began working full-time on the family farm in Escalon, CA.  After moving away from Escalon, she spent the last ten years with her grandson and family in Danville, CA. Ruby loved her family, sewing, ceramics, crafts and playing bingo with friends whenever she had a free moment.  Ruby was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Schmalek, and daughter, Judie Mulvihill.  Ruby is survived by her grandson and wife, Michael and Melissa Mulvihill; her great grandchildren, Quinn and Liliana Mulvihill.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Deegan Funeral Chapel.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Friday, June 28th, at St. Patrick’s Church, 19401 State Highway 120, Escalon, CA 95320.
Her final resting place will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.  To send condolences to the family please visit www.deeganfuneralchapels.com.
