Ruiz scores 14 as Squires top Tigers

Daniel Ruiz scored 14 points Tuesday night at the Dalben Center in leading the East Union sophomore basketball team to a 51-45 win over Patterson.
TeeJay Gordon chimed in with 10 and Logan Miller had eight.
EU led 25-15 at the break.
“We did enough to win,” EU head coach Jeff Lund said. “We started playing our game in the third.”
EU (4-1) hosts Bear Creek Friday.

 

Manteca 63, Bear Creek 40
Eric Godfrey was nearly unstoppable Tuesday night at Winter Gym, scoring 33 points in leading the Buffs past the Bruins.
Matt Burrows scored 10, Josh Walters eight and C.J. Rivas six.
“Our execution was a 180 degree turnaround from the Ceres game,” Buffs head coach Jimmy Perez said. “The kids gave 110 percent tonight.”
Manteca hosts Lathrop Thursday before welcoming Tokay to Winter Gym Friday.

Sierra 46, Lathrop 24
The T’Wolves (1-3) picked up their first win of the year behind eight points each from Antonio Acosta, Grant Widmer and Bryce Hicks.
“Everyone got plenty of playing time and 10 players scored,” Sierra head coach Justin Muschott said. “It’s good to get our first win out of the way, but now we need to focus on Ripon (tonight).”
Mike Unterholzner provided five points, as did Mike Leland.
Jerod Patton had four.

Freshman
East Union 55, Patterson 34
Brandon Clone had 15, Brock Swift eight and Zac Carillo scored seven points and had seven rebounds as the Pages improved to 3-2 on the season.
“We had a 12-day layoff coming in, so we were a little rusty in the first,” EU head coach Brett Lewis said. “But we started pressing after the half and had a lot of steals and layups. We outran them a bit and they were fatigued.”
The Pages will have another lengthy break, as their next action will be Dec. 27 at the Manteca tournament.
Up first will be a rematch with Ripon Christian.

Sierra 48, Lathrop 33
Joseph Berry scored 16, Tim Thornton had six and Bret Wilson chimed in with five as the T’Wolves had little trouble dispatching the Spartans Tuesday night at home.

Manteca 40, Bear Creek 34
Tim Baker had 10 points, while both Stanley Walker and Ben O’Dell had seven as Manteca improved to 4-2 on the year with the win.
The Buffs host Lathrop Thursday night.

Sophomore
Sierra 48, Beyer 30
In Modesto, Alysia Atkins had 19 points and Jordan Johnson netted nine as the T’Wolves improved to 9-1 on the year.
 
East Union 34, Johansen 24
Katrina Camera had 10 points and six rebounds, while both Morgan Hulsebosch and Briona Fontenot chipped in nine.
Brittany LaMar grabbed eight rebounds.
With the win. EU moved to 4-2 overall with a trip to Ripon looming Friday.
 
Manteca 46, Buhach Colony 18
In Atwater, the Buffs (4-1) continued their impressive start to the season with a blowout win Tuesday night.
Dallas Mould scored 13 points, Emily Owsley had eight and Gabby Escobedo six as 10 Buffaloes scored.
 
Freshman
Manteca 40, Buhach Colony 18
In Atwater, Kym Gause’s squad picked up its second win of the season behind 10 points from both Jessica Reeder and Brianna Bell.
Mia Ramirez chimed in with seven.
Manteca is now 2-3 overall.
 
Sierra 53, Beyer 30
In Modesto, Lia Unterholzner had a huge night, scoring 17 points, grabbing seven steals and collecting five rebounds as the T’Wolves racked up another win.
Allison Armstrong wasn’t too bad herself, turning in a double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds).
Jessica Lopez scored 11.
“it was a great game,” Sierra head coach Steve Unterholzner said. “We played strong defense in the first half and shot the ball pretty well.”
 
East Union 68, Johansen 19
In Modesto, the Lady Pages improved to 9-2 overall with the blowout win.
Kristen Piasecki had 17 points, and Klasey Kachalkin turned in 13.
Allison Telles had 10 points and six assists, and Kelsey Emmerson had five rebounds.
Ten players scored for Larissa Founts’ crew including Gina Vargas (2 points, 2 rebounds).
Jennifer Ramos hauled in three boards.
EU travels to Ripon Friday.
