Twelve area standouts are among the region’s top players to be selected for the 23rd Annual High School All-Star Baseball-Softball Classic.

Recent graduates representing more than 30 high schools from the San Joaquin County and surrounding Central Valley areas will converge at Delta College’s Nick Cecchetti Baseball Field and Bucky Layland Softball Complex Thursday evening. First pitch for the baseball game is scheduled for 5:15, and about a half hour later for softball.

Elena Flores and Gabby Olmo of Sierra High’s Valley Oak League and Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV championship softball squad are joining forces with four others from the Manteca area on the South team.

Manteca High’s Monique Colunga and Nicole Magnuson are going to be coached by Corey Navarro one last time. It is the second time in three years that Navarro was picked to coach in the all-star event.

East Union infielder Laura Gann and Weston Ranch’s Lydia McDonald made the South roster, which also consists of players from Argonaut, Bret Harte, Escalon, Merrill West, Millennium, Pacheco and Tracy. The North is comprised of players from Stockton and Lodi schools.

The baseball teams are mixed. Dominic Nelson and Chris Saenz, after leading Ripon Christian to the SJS Division VI semifinals for a second straight year, are on the South team, while Foitos Jordanoglou and Scott Robison from neighboring rival Ripon High are playing for the North. Lathrop High’s Mikey Pereznegron and Preston Rizo are also on the North.

Advance tickets are available through the local high school baseball and softball programs. Tickets are $5, and children 8-and-under are free. Proceeds will benefit the Recreational Sports Club of San Joaquin, Stockton Community Council of United Way and high school sports programs.
