The howling winds and hard-pouring rain didn’t keep Manteca, Lathrop and Weston Ranch high schools’ boys soccer teams from playing Tuesday, but one match involving another area team was cancelled.

Sierra was scheduled to head to Sonora Tuesday, but the Valley Oak League contest has been postponed to Monday, Oct. 26.

Sierra athletic director Greg Leland, also the VOL’s manager for soccer, was contacted by Sonora’s Rick Francis Tuesday and was told that winds were expected to reach 55 mph by the evening. The game was set to kickoff at 6:30 p.m. at Dunlavy Field.

Sonora High was without power during the morning.

“Under the circumstances, I think this is a very good move,” Leland said.
Golf and tennis were mostly affected.

A Valley Foothill League girls golf match between rivals Ripon and Ripon Christian has tentatively been rescheduled for today at 3:30 p.m. at Jack Tone Golf Course.

East Union and Sierra, the VOL’s top two teams, were to lock horns one last time in dual action at Manteca Park Golf Course, but the meeting was moved to Monday.

Three VOL girls tennis matches are rescheduled for Friday. East Union hosts first-place Ceres at 3:30, Sierra takes on Lathrop on the road and Manteca travels to Central Valley.

Light showers and winds are expected to hit the Manteca area today, according to Weather.com, but the sun should return with temperatures in the mid- to high-70s.
