Jena Anderson and Stephanie Vanni did what was expected of them Thursday against Oakdale to remain the lone undefeated doubles team in the Valley Oak League.

It came down to the final two matches, both singles, but Sierra couldn’t close the door in its 4-1 loss to the second-place Mustangs at East Union High.

Anderson and Vanni cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Mariah King and Kristen Barrett, making it 1-1 on the team score at the time.

“Right now their focus is to close out the season undefeated,” Sierra coach Arabella Whitlock said.

The No. 1 singles showdown was a doozy between Sierra’s Ann McFerran and the hard-hitting Elise Derby from Oakdale. After the two exchanged 6-3 wins in the first two sets, McFerran appeared to be in the driver’s seat in the deciding set with a 5-4 lead.

But Derby battled back and won it on the tiebreaker, 7-4.

“That was a great singles match,” Whitlock said. “Ann played very well, but she definitely needs to work on her first serve. If she can get those first serves in, she should be a lot more to contend with.”

Oakdale took the lead when No. 2 doubles Korinne and Laurie Baxter defeated Sierra’s MaryAnn Baker and Kayla Erion 6-2, 6-3. Timberwolf Vannida Nguyen was swept 0-6, 0-6 by Tierney Seidel in the No. 2 singles match.

The clincher was the No. 3 singles contest. Kelly Fuentes took a 3-0 lead in the second set, and a third seemed imminent. But Oakdale’s Emily Clayton ran the table to take it 6-3 after winning the opening set, 6-2.

“Kelly is raw, but she’s one of our most improved players,” Whitlock said. “She put up a good fight.”

Sierra heads to Lathrop today for a make-up match.
