Ripon City Council’s Aug. 6 meeting has been canceled, in part, for National Night Out.

Elected leaders initially tinkered with the plan to change the start time of the regular scheduled meeting from 7 p.m. to 5 o’clock. In the past, they would bolt from the Council Chambers to the Ripon Community Center to take part in the National Night Out activities.

But with a light agenda and not much in terms of items needing approval on a timely basis, Council members unanimously agreed to cancel the meeting. Their next scheduled session is Aug. 20.

As for National Night Out, the free city-wide event will again take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Community Center.

One of the highlights of this Ripon event is the watermelon-eating contest won last year by Ripon Consolidated Fire District’s Training Battalion Chief Marty Cornilsen, who edged out then-defending champ Ripon Police Chief Ed Ormonde.

“We get to make spectacles of ourselves for everybody’s enjoyment,” he said back then.

The watermelons were donated by Van Groningen and Sons, Inc.

In recent years, the Ripon Ministerial Association has stepped up to co-sponsor National Night Out along with the City of Ripon. This community event is now a partnership involving the group made up of various churches in town coupled with the local police and fire district.

Those attending enjoyed freebies such as hot dogs, bottled water, popcorn, cotton candy, balloons, and face painting.

Organizers estimated attendance at about 1,200 based on the 1,500 hot dogs given away.
