Manteca Police are still searching for a gunman that shot a Manteca woman in the side of the face Friday night.

Just before 10 p.m. on Friday, Manteca Police were dispatched to the corner of Birchwood and Crestwood avenues after multiple neighbors called the police and reported gunshots.

Officers arrived and discovered a 44-year-old woman kneeling on the sidewalk, bleeding from the left side of her face. She told police that her car had broken down in the area and that she and her boyfriend were walking towards K-Mart when the shooter pulled up in a light-colored sedan and opened fire.

Three neighbors reportedly heard the six shots fired in rapid succession and came outside to investigate, only to find the woman crouched on the sidewalk.

One witness said that the woman told him her name and that she was shot in the eye by somebody driving a light-colored Chevrolet Caprice Classic. Officers believe that it was a different General Motors make that may be responsible.

The victim was transported to San Joaquin County General Hospital where she was treated and interviewed by police.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and officials haven’t ruled out the possibility that it was gang-related.

No additional information – the name of the victim or additional details regarding what happened or what may have led up to it – is being released at this time.

Anybody with information is urged to contact the Manteca Police Department at (209) 456-8100 or the South County Crime Stoppers at (209) 823-4636.
