A dark colored pickup truck was driven through the front glass windows and door of the Manteca Gas & Go Chevron station at Louise and Cottage avenues shortly after 3 a.m. Monday for the second time in seven months.

It was also the first of two attempted burglaries within 30 minutes of each other on Monday, Manteca Police said.

The second took place at the Shop & Go convenience store at Yosemite Avenue and Union Road where two men in gray and black hoodies were believed to have been scared away by newspaper motor route carriers pulling up to the darkened business.

One of the carriers said the men drove off at a high rate of speed in what was reportedly a dark colored ‘90s Chevy Malibu, fleeing west on Yosemite Avenue.  The carrier said it was surprising the men didn’t bottom out on the roadway with their vehicle due to their excess speed in exiting the center next to a popular coffee shop.

Manteca Police Sergeant Jodie Estarziau said the men apparently attempted to break in to the ATM machine in the westside store, adding that they were unsuccessful.  The two newspaper delivery staffers said it looked like they had scared the thieves off when they drove toward the door with their headlights illuminating the store.   They said they saw one in the car and the other running toward the car from a small broken out window.

It wasn’t the first time the station/convenience store at Cottage and Louise avenues was shattered with the impact of a vehicle in the early morning predawn hours.  Sgt. Estarziau said that three men in a pickup truck crashed into the glass entrance but nothing was taken as she speculated they were probably scared off as well.

Estarziau said the men were last seen driving northbound on Cottage Avenue in their pickup truck at a high rate of speed.

Nothing was taken from the store except for the expense to the owner in replacing the metal door frame and plate glass window frames and glass.  It was just seven months ago on Christmas Eve morning when a van was backed into the rear entrance during the night when thieves attempted to make off with the ATM located near the front of the store.
