RIPON — One up. One down.

Ripon High’s bid to repeat as Trans Valley League runner-up started smoothly, and then some, Tuesday night in a 72-27 pasting of Hughson at home.

Efren Sifuentes hit four 3-pointers and scored 11 of his game-high 14 during a 25-8 Ripon second-quarter run.

Matt Ratto chipped in 11 and Ryan Baker had nine as the Indians led 20-9 after one and held a 40-point lead with nearly six minutes remaining in the third.

The officials called for a running clock in the fourth.

“(Hughson) shot very poorly, but it was because our defense was really good,” Ripon head coach Rod Wright said. “We shot well on their box-and-1.”

Kyle Mendel finished with nine and Justin Emmons had five.

Ryan Alexander scored six and grabbed seven boards.

Ripon (1-0 TVL, 10-8 overall) hosts Riverbank Friday.

The Knights held the Bruins to single-digit scoring through the first three quarters and used a 17-4 third-quarter run to pull away and claim the big win.

Kelsey Tillema led the way with 21 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks, Christine Rettinhouse chipped in seven and five boards, and Raeline Witt scored five.

Amanda Boersma handed out a season-high four assists, Kayla Evans had five steals.

“Kayla Evans did an outstanding job of breaking the press in the second half,” RC head coach Kirk Tillema said. “Her leadership and distribution of the ball, as well as her five steals contributed greatly to the victory.”

RC (1-0 TVL, 7-7 overall) travels to Escalon Thursday.

Hughson 43, Ripon 29
Lauren Feddersen had 12 and Paulina Ceja scored six but it wouldn’t be enough in the TVL-opening loss.

Hughson led by 16 at the break.

“We dug a hole that we couldn’t get out of,” Ripon head coach George Contente said. “We missed shots early and couldn’t recover. Jessica Blythe injured her back in the second quarter. That hurt us.”

Ripon (0-1 TVL, 6-11 overall) travels to Riverbank Thursday.
