Richard “Rev” Brown

Founding pastor of Manteca Christian School

The Rev. Richard “Rev” Brown, 72, pastor of First Assembly of God in Manteca for nearly three decades (the church is now called The Place of Refuge) at the North Main Street and Button Avenue locations, passed away at home in Manteca on Oct. 17, 2009 surrounded by family. A native of Chico, Calif., he was born on July 17, 1937.

He retired five years ago and moved from Manteca to Phoenix, but recently returned to Manteca. He was the senior pastor of First Assembly of God in Manteca for 27 years. He was a member of Assembly of God church in Tracy and other parts of California for 50 years, often being called upon to pastor some of those churches. He was the founding pastor of Manteca Christian School located at the site of the church that the congregation started to build when he was the pastor.

He helped spread the gospel to many homeless people around the Phoenix, Ariz., area and was an active church planter locally and worldwide, in addition to helping start many churches. “Rev” Brown liked to play the trombone and even played in a few Jazz bands. He was also a singer in the quartet group, “Forerunners.” He was an avid fisherman and also loved hunting. He liked to go four-wheel driving. He even worked as a logger in his younger years. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He was the husband of Judy Brown of Manteca with whom he was married for 11 years, and the late Sabra Brown who passed away in 1997 with whom he was married for 41 years.

He was the father of David Brown and wife Janet of Doty, WA; Sharon Jones and husband Roni of Bothell, WA; Shelley Gutierrez and husband Issac of Manteca; Chandra Aaron of Queen Creek, AZ; Rashelle Teed and husband Brian of Phoenix, AZ;  and Robert Bailey of Phoenix, AZ. He was the brother of Jerry Brown of Colorado Springs, CO; grandfather of 13 and great-grandfather of 3.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 24, 2009, 10 a.m. at First Assembly of God, 486 Button Avenue, Manteca.  A time of viewing will follow the service time.

Interment will be on Monday, October 26, 2009, 1 p.m. at Stirling City Cemetery, 7687 Mica Street, Stirling City, CA.
