The City of Ripon’s elected leaders will look to make it official in keeping marijuana dispensaries off limits.

At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, they could adopt an ordinance that would “enact a complete and total prohibition of medical marijuana dispensaries, cooperatives and collectives” within the city.

Councilman Jake Parks, at last month’s meeting, called this move “a preventive measure against crime and abuse.”

He pointed out that crimes have often been associated with these dispensaries, in turn, meaning increased police time, and that those with “green cards” – as prescribed under the Medical Marijuana Program – were more than likely to abuse the privileges.

If approved, Ripon will join the nine counties, 72 cities that have since banned marijuana dispensaries with similar-type ordinances. Included are Riverside, Orange, Santa Barbara, San Bernardino, Beaumont, Anaheim and Fresno.

This item is on the agenda for the 7 p.m. open session at the Ripon City Hall Council Chamber, 259 N. Wilma Ave.
