Cowboys ride Colts in season opener

The Manteca Cowboys defense was in midseason form Saturday at East Union’s Dino Cunial Field, where the varsity squad pitched a 10-0 shutout against the Lodi Colts. The Cowboys ended up sweeping at all levels on the opening day of the DYSA NorCal Youth Football League.

Tyler Slaughter was on the receiving end of the game’s only touchdown play, catching a 9-yard toss from Joseph Espinosa. Mason James rushed for 76 yards on 17 carries.

Klayton Torres highlighted the big-play defense with two fumble recoveries. La’Fonzo Mackson recorded a team-high six tackles and also recovered a fumble. Brayden Hardcastle and Joseph Espinoza each contributed a fumble recovery.

Manteca faces another Lodi-based squad next week, when it takes on host Tokay Jr. Tigers.



Junior varsity

Cowboys 31, Colts 13


Jordan Doyle scored on touchdown runs from 17, 1 and 2 yards out and totaled 100 yards in the Cowboys’ victory.

Anthony Martinez piled up 110 rushing yards, the majority of which came on a 70-yard touchdown. Andrew Sena hit paydirt on a 45-yard pass play from Manuel Rodriguez and helped the defense with three tackles and an interception. Mathew Pilkay racked up 60 yards rushing, five unassisted tackles and a blocked kick.

Ismael Munoz paced the defense with six tackles and a fumble recovery. Gabriel Vollotton picked up five tackles and caused a fumble. Drew Mount also had five stops to go with a fumble recovery.



Rookies

Cowboys 25, Colts 0


Kimoni Stanley set the tone with an 80-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage, finishing with 144 yards on just nine carries. Quarterback Eric Morales added 78 yards on two bootlegs.

Joey Aguirre spearheaded the defense’s shutout with 10 tackles. Nicco Cedolini added seven stops, and Adam Sena had five.



Starts

Cowboys 25, Colts 19


Manteca relied on its dominant run game led by Alex Scoz’s 198 yards and three TDs.  Eric Barojas tacked on the other Cowboys touchdown.

Noel Ruezga collected seven tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery on defense. Alex Cervantes (5 tackles) and Alex  Scoz (4 tackles, fumble recovery) each recorded a pair of sacks.
