Barbara Marie Fitch Hildebrand passed away at home on August 28, 2013, at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 63 years, Alexander Hildebrand, and by her beloved brother, Stuart Grunewald Fitch.  Barbara was born on May 7, 1921, in Pasadena, California, the daughter of Dr. Stewart Jackson Fitch and Dr. Marie Grunewald Fitch. She graduated from Pasadena City College in 1941 as class valedictorian and earned a B.S. degree in Physical Education from the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating with highest honors in 1943. She was awarded two Stanford University fellowships, one for teaching and the other for research, and earned a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy. She worked as a Physical Therapist until her marriage.
   After marrying Alex in 1948 and starting a family they moved to their farm in the Manteca area in 1962. She was a devoted mother and got involved in all her daughters’ activities, serving as a leader in both Girl Scouts and 4-H. While helping Alex with farming, she also set up a library at Nile Garden School and ran it for several years as a parent volunteer. 
   She became involved in the Manteca Library as a volunteer and substitute staff person. A charter member of the Friends of the Manteca Library and Treasurer from 1974 to 2011, she served countless hours supervising book sales, training and scheduling other library volunteers, and organizing tax forms in the library lobby.  She served on every library task force and advisory board for many years, and lobbied to maintain library hours and services. In 1999 she was inducted into the Manteca Hall of  Fame for her service to the community.
   She is survived by her daughters Mary Kathleen Hildebrand,  Janet Hildebrand, and Harriet Hildebrand Patton (Lewis), granddaughters Linda Class and Kathleen Class (Michelle Martin), grandson David Class, and great granddaughters Ashley, Kayla, and Aryanna, sisters- and brothers-in-law Nancy Fitch, Milton Hildebrand, Roger and Jane Hildebrand, and many cherished nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
   P.L. Fry and Son is honored to serve the Hildebrand Family. Family services will be held in private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Friends of the Manteca Library, 320 W. Center Street, Manteca, CA  95336, or to Hospice of San Joaquin, 3888 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA  95204.
