HUIGHSON — A questionable call kept the Ripon High boys soccer team from playing for a championship on Saturday.

That doesn’t mean the Indians left Hughson empty-handed.

Playing its fifth game in two days and fourth of the afternoon, Ripon rebounded in the consolation game of the Hughson Husky Cup.

Mauricio Aguirre and Brandon Roma scored back-to-back goals in a five-minute span in the second half as Ripon placed third with a 2-0 victory over Delhi.

The tournament wasn’t so much a test of talent as it was conditioning. Ripon went 3-1 in tournament play and very nearly found itself in the championship game.

Locked in a defensive duel with Gregori, the Indians were whistled for what coach Jamie DeBruyn said was a suspect call along the end line.

Gregori — Modesto’s youngest high school — finished the penalty kick, earning a spot in the championship.

“Long day with four games,” DeBruyn said, “but I was pleased with the play throughout the day.”

Ripon (3-2) boasted an 8-1 scoring advantage in tournament victories over Denair, Mariposa and Delhi. Seven different players recorded goals for the Indians, who began their season with a 1-0 loss to Waterford Friday.

Roma, Victor de la O, Matt Uecker and Flavio Valadao notched goals in the Indians’ opening 4-0 win over Denair. Brock Herrin and Thomas Sidtikun provided the offense in a 2-0 decision over Mariposa.

Sidtikun also had two assists during tournament play.

Ripon Christian went 1-1-1, closing a long afternoon with a 2-1 victory over tournament host Hughson. Danny Vander Molen and Kyle Van Vuren scored in the finale and Lukas Vermeulen had seven saves.

Vermeulen had 21 total saves. Travis Vander Molen scored the Knights’ only goal in a 1-1 draw with Delhi.

Ripon Christian dropped a tight 1-0 game to Lathrop in the morning game.

“It was a good day,” Ripon Christian coach Keith Terpsma said. “Our goal coming into this early season tournament was to figure each other out. We were able to find some strong points to build on.”
