MAN DROWNS IN AFTER DUMPING POT CRAB INTO SEA: PT. REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE  (AP) — Authorities say a man has drowned in Northern California after he fell over the side of a boat while dumping a crab pot into the water.

Marin County Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Giannini says the man dropped the pot in Tomales Bay Sunday morning, and didn't realize that his leg had become tangled in a rope attached to the pot.

He was pulled overboard and dragged under by the weight of the pot.

The man wasn't wearing a life jacket at the time.

Rescue crews later found his body..

SHUTTERED RIDE TO MOVE TO MISSOURI PARK: BUENA PARK  (AP) — A ride that stranded people 300 feet high twice last year will be moving from Knott's Berry Farm to a sister amusement park in Missouri next year.

Park officials said the Windseeker ride will be relocated to Worlds of Fun in Kansas City in January, according to the Orange County Register ( The two parks are owned by the same company.

Leidy Arevalo, a spokeswoman for Knott's Berry Farm, says it's not uncommon for parks to share rides.

"It's to ensure that we are exceeding our guests' expectations," she said.

The Windseeker takes people 300 feet in the air and twirls them at up to a 45-degree angle for about 60 seconds. It malfunctioned twice last year, most dramatically in September when a frozen brake left 20 riders stranded for several hours until they could be safely brought down. No one was injured.

11 RESCUED AFTER YACHT BUMPS INTO CA PIER: NEWPORT BEACH  (AP) — Lifeguards have rescued 11 people who had to abandon a yacht after it drifted toward a Southern California pier and bumped its pillars.

Orange County Sheriff's Deputy William Nelson said no one was injured in Sunday night's accident off Balboa Pier in Newport Beach.

Nelson said someone aboard the 55-foot yacht reported to authorities that the boat lost power and was drifting toward shore. He said heavy fog hampered rescuers' search of the boat and they didn't get a clear view of it until it came close to the pier.

He said the boat couldn't set anchor without power, and it eventually "rubbed into" the pier.

Authorities evacuated the pier and lifeguards swam with the passengers to shore.

.SCULPTURE OF SLAIN DETECTIVE UNVEILED: LAKE ARROWHEAD  (AP) — A sculpture of a San Bernardino County sheriff's detective killed by a rogue former Los Angeles police officer has been unveiled in Lake Arrowhead.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports ( a nine-foot monument of Jeremiah MacKay was put on public display Sunday. MacKay was shot by ex-LAPD officer Christopher Dorner Feb. 12 after following him to a mountain cabin that later went up in flames. Dorner's remains were found inside.

More than 200 people attended a ceremony before walking a short distance to an area where the sculpture was unveiled.

The sculpture, depicting MacKay from the waist up, shows the officer with his right hand over his heart. The figure is wearing a beret and has a dove next to him.

10 INJURED IN   TOUR BUS CRASH : TEMECULA  (AP) — Ten people were injured in a crash of a tour bus that was headed from Los Angeles to an Indian casino in northern San Diego County, authorities said Monday.

A group of 18 people was aboard the bus when it careened off the road and crashed into some trees and boulders about 10:50 p.m. Sunday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The 50-year-old driver and nine passengers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The most severe injury appeared to be a cut to the head, authorities said.
