Manteca High’s boys soccer team remains undefeated in nonleague play after edging past Tokay 2-1 in Lodi on Monday.

Jesus Ponce headed in the game-winner in the 75th minute off Ramon Rodriguez’s cross from the edge of the penalty box. The Buffaloes (7-0) struck in the opening minutes when Marcus Montano took a feed from Kevin Rodriguez and blasted it to the back of the net.

Goalie Abdiel Chiquito recorded six saves. Manteca outshot the Tigers 14-10 but was not sharp. Coming off their successful defense of the Buffalo Cup on Saturday, the players appeared to have weary legs to head coach Justin Coenenberg.

“You can tell today they were tired because we didn’t play well at all,” Coenenberg said. “We came out and scored early, but after that we were just dragging.”

Manteca has two more matches left in its busy pre-league schedule, which ends with Division I opponents Modesto on the road Wednesday and Franklin at home Friday. The Buffaloes started 9-0 last season before making their run to a co-championship in the Valley Oak League.
