Gunfire kills 19-year-old in Lathrop

LATHROP – Two young men — including one that was killed — were shot late Thursday night in Lathrop after a vehicle chase ended in gunfire on a residential street.

Dashawn Johns, 19, was struck while riding in the passenger seat of the car that was reportedly being pursued. He was airlifted to a Modesto hospital later died.

According to the report given to deputies by the 23-year-old driver, the pair were being followed by a black van. The vehicle that they were riding in came to rest in the front yard of a home on the 100 block of Reiger Drive. The driver managed to crawl to the front door and ask the homeowner to call for help.

He currently in the intensive care unit at an area hospital and his condition is not known.

The matter is being investigated as a homicide by San Joaquin County Sherriff’s Detectives.

Thursday’s shooting marks the first homicide in Lathrop since three people were shot – and one killed – in the early morning hours outside of a nightspot off of Louise Avenue more than a year ago.
