It took the Manteca High cheer program exactly four minutes to leave a lasting impression on the Oakland Raiderettes.

Select members of the Buffalo cheer squad performed at halftime of the Raiders-Buccaneers game last fall as part of the High School Spirit Explosion program.

“It was really something exciting that they can take with them the rest of their lives,” said Lisa Quaresma, Manteca cheer advisor and coach.

Turns out, it was more than that.

During a chance encounter with a Manteca High employee near their booth at the Alameda County fair earlier this year, the Raiderettes begged the Buffaloes back.

Ask and you shall receive.

Manteca High will send 13 cheerleaders to the Raiders’ in-state rivalry game with the San Diego Chargers on Sunday evening at O.co Coliseum. The cheerleaders will perform at halftime of the AFC West opener.

“It was nice that they remembered us with so many people,” Quaresma said.

The squad is comprised of varsity and frosh-soph members:

(BULLET) Varsity: Lanet Miranda, senior captain; Anessia Lopes, senior captain; Shardae Jones; Hope Palomar; Paige La Due; Melanio Pio; Makeila Hofer; Shynia Bruce; and Juanzin Espeiel.

(BULLET) Frosh-Soph: Erika Decena; Jasmine Aleman; Gabrielle Pitman; and Ashley Lopez.

Though the Buffaloes were asked to return, the invitation was informal.

Quaresma still had to go through the necessary steps with High School Spirit Explosion. That called for filing an application and meeting certain deadlines.

The Buffaloes emerged as part of the final group, which Quaresma estimates at 400-500 cheerleaders from around California.

Kickoff for Sunday’s game has been pushed backed to 8:35 p.m., because of the American League Divisional Series between the Oakland A’s and Detroit Tigers. The A’s-Tigers play Game 2 at O.co Coliseum on Saturday night, but crew members need the additional time Sunday to reconfigure the stadium for an NFL game.

The teen-aged cheerleaders welcome the extra time.

The Buffaloes received the first two minutes of the halftime routine with their confirmation packets last week. They’ll learn the final two minutes during a mandatory rehearsal practice on Saturday at the Raiders’ practice facility.

“They are definitely in overdrive,” Quaresma said.

Each member of the cheer squad will receive a DVD of their rehearsal and performance, as well as pictures with the Raiderettes.
