Editor, Manteca Bulletin,

I thought the DeBrum/Cantu mayoral race column of a few days ago needed some clarification.

Let me cut to the chase. I attended Steve DeBrum’s reception and listened to his presentation. The issues represented were the same as highlighted four and eight years ago, and during his initial bid for office twelve years ago. The words were no different than those presented by each present sitting councilmember and the mayor. Unfortunately, for the past 12 years (and longer) those promises have yet to be transformed into reality, because the Council has not deviated from past practices and focus. Moreover, no one on the Council has the slightest idea why today (and over decades) service levels have diminished, why there isn’t enough money to provide for community needs in a timely manner, and why community growth is devouring surrounding agricultural lands at an accelerating rate.

Cantu’s world includes much more than 34 years as Manteca’s city planner. My youth includes growing up in an agricultural family and driving farm tractors and highway trucks from dawn to dusk, and keeping the family business books. My background includes operated a trucking firm for many years, transporting steel from Stockton to throughout California. I am educated in farming operations, business, architecture, construction, and, of course, city planning. I also have experience in marketing, engineering, environmental protection, and city hall administration, budgeting, personnel management, and the municipal infrastructure.

The mayoral election will not be just a debate about growth management and agricultural preservation; it will be about the diminishing service levels, why there isn’t enough money to provide for community needs, and who has control over the future of this community. I will be pressing and debating any mayoral candidate for an answer to these important questions.

By the way, I filed my mayoral candidacy intention on January 31, 2013.

Benjamin Cantu
