Pressure will be taken off neighborhood street parking around Woodward Park when work is completed this spring on a 164-space parking lot in the park’s southeast corner.

The Manteca City Council is expected to award the project to Stockton-based Knife River Construction when they meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center. Knife River’s bid of $594,540.71 was the lowest of 11 submitted.

The parking lot - complete with lighting fixtures and internal landscaping - is being developed on the southeast corner of the park where Bridewell Avenue meets Heartland Drive. Park growth fees are paying for the work No general fund revenue is involved.

The location is on the edge of the fenced in fields. It will include an American Disabilities Act compliant access ramp to the playing fields in the adjoining storm basin, landscaping, and a storm drain system.

Original plans called for the city to build a small park maintenance yard at that location.

The parking lot is expected to take pressure off street parking during soccer tournaments and regular league play. Neighbors have complained during larger tournaments that cars are often parked across driveways, on corners, and in front of fire hydrants. Ticketing efforts by Manteca Police in the past have confirmed those problems.
