Why should Obama negotiate with Teapublicans?

Editor, Manteca Bulletin,

I can only assume the writers of the letters published in the Your Views section (“Blames Reid, Democrats for shutdown”) on Oct. 2, (“Dumbfounded about our Commander in Chief”)  Oct. 4, and (“Healthcare: Young people underwriting older folks”) also on Oct 4. are living in a bubble or only have one channel on their TV and one station on their radio, Fox News and Rush Limbaugh. These letters from the bubble were further enhanced by a piece from Pat Buchanan (“Sadistic strategy of Obama & Reid”). You can imagine what that was all about.

Even our own Editor chimed in with some comments about how a government shutdown isn’t that bad after all. Tell that to those government employees who aren’t getting paid right now.

Now I know I live in the middle of what seems to be Tea Party Central but this Ted Cruz sponsored shutdown seems to be bringing them out of the woodwork. Let’s ignore the “Dumbfounded” letter, that writer seems to be baffled at the foreign policy of this Administration. Apparently he misses the “Cowboy Diplomacy” of the previous Administration and we all know how that turned out, don’t we? Now let’s look at some facts:

1. The other writers, Pat Buchanan, etc.. blame the Senate Democrats for not passing a budget proposed by the House Republicans which includes the de-funding of the Affordable Health Care Act which the GOP renamed “ObamaCare”. That is surely going to come back and bite them when “ObamaCare” becomes the success it seems to building up to. Bet they drop that moniker faster than they can brew a cup of tea.

2. All also agree that the shutdown is because the Democrats won’t negotiate on ObamaCare. Remember this a three year old law, passed by the Congress, signed into law by the President, and upheld as constitutional by the Supreme Court. Why would they want to negotiate it, or any part of it, away now?  Every part the GOP House has listed in subsequent offers to the Senate is essential to the viability of the law. You can’t remove any of those parts without crippling the entire law.

3. The real reason the GOP is so interested in killing ObamaCare is because they are scared out of their minds that it will become popular as Medicare and Social Security did, which were also opposed to when they were first introduced. Now you better not touch either of them or your political career will be short lived. Am I wrong?

4. Who really wants this shutdown? That is easy to explain, even before the 2010 elections Teapublicans were telling anyone who would listen, that they could hardly wait to shut down the government. They are all on record, look it up!

I don’t think the Democrats or Obama should negotiate with the Teapublicans, besides, I think Obama has learned his lesson on negotiating with these nut cases. Negotiating with these guys is like playing chess with a pigeon. The pigeon knocks over all the pieces, craps on the board and then struts around like it won the game.
