LATHROP — The Lathrop High sophomore squad closed out the season with a 20-0 loss to visiting Sacramento on Friday.

The Spartans (3-5) squad was made up mostly of freshmen, showing improvement each week.

Lathrop coach Eric Relova noted his team was idle last week due to a forfeit and was fresh off a win during the previous week.

The Spartans had trouble getting on track against the Dragons.

Sacramento jumped out to the big first-half lead and never let up.

Lathrop was able to move the ball on several occasions, with Emilio Cardenas and Ark Ramirez reeling off some nice runs and Jevon Young making a nice catch, according to Relova.

It was the Alex Martinez show Friday night as the Manteca High sophomore football team cruised to a 22-6 victory over the visiting Central Valley Hawks.

After scoring the game’s first touchdown on a 12-yard scamper, Martinez would connect on two touchdown passes that would be enough to give Manteca the margin it would need to the put the game out of reach of the Hawks.

Both of Martinez’ touchdown passes were to Eric Déjà from 32 and 12 yards out, respectively.

“Alex (Martinez) is really working well with Eric (Ceja) at this point in the season and they’ve really found trust in each other,” Manteca head coach Adam Liel said. “It was a great team effort, and we had a lot of players step up and play well for us tonight.”

Martinez completed 9 of his 17 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns, and Ceja managed to grab six of those passes for 136 receiving yards in addition to his two end-zone grabs – individual performances that helped the Buffaloes mount 242 offensive yards on the night.
