TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — One of three members of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers diagnosed with MRSA has had surgery to get rid of the staph infection. MRSA is difficult to treat because it’s resistant to many common antibiotics.

Carl Nicks had surgery Tuesday night and coach Greg Schiano said the guard is doing well.

The two-time All-Pro was diagnosed as having MRSA in a blister of the left side of his foot during training camp in August. He was treated with antibiotics and appeared in two regular season games before the Bucs announced last week that Nicks had a recurrence.

Kicker Lawrence Tynes also was found to have MRSA in August and is on the non-football injury list. A third case was discovered last week, but rookie cornerback Johnthan Banks has not been sidelined by the infection.

Von Miller back with Broncos

Von Miller is back — and bigger than ever. His coach and his teammates said Denver’s All-Pro linebacker looked great Wednesday in his first practice since serving his six-game drug abuse suspension — all 270 pounds of him. That’s how much Miller said he weighed in at this week, a good 24 pounds heavier than when he won Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2011. Miller said he had no t

rouble with the extra muscle or the altitude because he served his suspension working with the Broncos’ trainers so that his cardiovascular conditioning wouldn’t be an issue upon his return.

Suh fined for hit

Ndamukong Suh has been fined by the NFL. Again. The Detroit Lions defensive tackle was docked $31,500 by the league for a hit on Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden.

Mayo on list
of injured Pats

Star linebacker Jerod Mayo went on season-ending injured reserve, joining star tackle Vince Wilfork on the list. On Sunday, their best defensive back, Aqib Talib, could be sidelined after hurting his hip. Then there’s the offense. Wide receiver Danny Amendola and guard Dan Connolly suffered concussions last Sunday. Tight end Rob Gronkowski hasn’t played all season.
