The Bulletin

Lathrop was somewhat competitive during a Valley Oak League matchup against East Union on Wednesday.

The Lancers’ powerful serving was just too overwhelming, however.

East Union senior Monica King led the team with eight kills and 17 service points (three aces) during a 3-1 victory over host Lathrop, 25-23, 13-25, 25-14, 25-9.

The Spartans (0-9 VOL) tied the match at one apiece with a 12-point victory in Game 2, but East Union (5-3 VOL, 17-5-2 overall) eventually woke up and closed it out.

“I think we get in a habit of getting a little too comfortable and too relaxed when we’re up on a team,” East Union head coach Rich Posz said. “That kind of carried over into the second set. We didn’t even come out to play. Luckily, we turned it around in the third and fourth set and played how we were supposed to.”

King finished with seven service points in the third game and eight service points in the fourth set. Senior outside hitter Regina Dias led the Lancers with 13 kills and 14 digs.

EU senior setter Courtney Posz tallied 17 assists with 12 service points (two aces).

Lathrop’s Jamie Ready finished with 10 assists. Desiree Mendola and Loreal Taylor (10 blocks) each finished with three kills. Ashley Diboki had seven blocks and Liz Brambila two aces.

“The girls just let their guard down a little bit,” Posz concluded. “Luckily, we snapped out of it, and I was proud of them for playing the style we were supposed to be playing with. We had some good serving runs and we served a little more aggressively, and that helped us.”

East Union will compete at the Stockton Classic tournament on Saturday and will resume VOL play on Monday at home against Kimball Tracy.
