The United Lutheran Church will open its food pantry Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.  The church is located at 649 West Northgate Drive west of North Main Street in Manteca.

Chris and Don Jenkins have been working tirelessly with a food bank for some 46 years in an effort to eliminate hunger in the communities they have called home.

“It hurts to be hungry,” Chris said. “It hurts in the stomach, in the head with headaches and it hurts mentally as well.”

As a child she remembers war torn East Germany where she witnessed hunger firsthand under the Nazi regime and then under Russian communist control until her family was able to move to America.

Both Chris and Don are continually involved in the Second Harvest Food Bank in Manteca where they volunteer every month before they open their own pantry of giving at their church.

Keri Tapia of Second Harvest credited the Jenkins for being regulars at the Food Bank on Industrial Park Drive for more than 15 years.

“They are the most kind and considerate people walking the streets of Manteca,” she said.  “If she could take care of the whole town of Manteca, they would. They have a phenomenal outreach.  Their hearts are literally made of gold – never an unkind word,” she said.
