Ripon Chiefs JV shut out Waterford

The Ripon Chiefs junior varsity football team continued its string of shutouts with a 39-0 victory over Waterford in the opening round of the Mountain Valley Football League playoffs.

Michael Solario scored three touchdowns for the top-seeded Chiefs (9-0), who haven’t relinquished a point in six consecutive games. For the season, Ripon has outscored its opponents 336-23 in nine games.

Points came in from all three phases on Saturday. Solario scored on runs of 42 and 39 yards, and then capped the scoring with a 43-yard punt return.

Quarterback Nicolas Ilardi and Anthony Sanchez connected on a 25-yard touchdown and Aiden Benzinger scored on the afternoon’s longest play – an 81-yard punt return. The defense even found the end zone, recording a safety in the second half.

The Chiefs will face Escalon on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Lathrop Lions

Jamaire Wayne and Aaron Vickers carried the Lathrop Lions cadets into the second round of the playoffs.

Wayne and Vickers each topped 100 yards and the defense surrendered just one first down as the Lions roared to a 41-7 victory. Zelmar Vedder, Elijah Dunn and Jonathan Jones found the end zone for Lathrop, which qualified five teams for the playoffs.

Three received byes – peewee, junior peewee and midgets – and will play next week in Sacramento. The fifth was eliminated on Saturday. The Lions’ tiny mites squad suffered a 28-7 setback.

The Lions’ cheer program was also in action over the weekend. The junior midget cheer squad took first place at the Jamz NorCal League Championships on Sunday at Independence High in San Jose. The junior peewee team was fourth in its division.
