A “Center of Excellence” status has been awarded to Doctors Hospital of Manteca for its level of breast care given to its patients.

“Since the Breast Health Program’s inception two years ago, we’ve made it one of our goals to achieve the quality that “Center of Excellence” status represents,” hospital CEO Mark Lisa said. “Our team of doctors, nurses and highly skilled technicians made this happen through lots of sweat equity and dedication - I’m very proud of them.”

Dr. Mario Sattah, M.D., who serves as the hospital’s diagnostic radiologist, noted that additional hours of training provided to the staff members has aided in putting them on the cutting edge in achieving their stated goals – in saving lives.

He said it is very significant for Doctors to receive the credit through the American College of Radiology survey for its performance since the Manteca hospital is a smaller breast imaging center compared to many of those in larger communities.

The survey looks at the outcomes of cases to see how successful breast biopsies have been over the course of the treatment of local patients, he said.

Chief Operating Officer at the hospital, Carmen Silva, lauded both Dr. Sattah and R.N. Debbie Aventi, along with physicians working together, for the success of the program.

Sattah added that it is an obvious commitment on the part of the hospital to have a nurse coordinator like Debbie Aventi in the imaging program to hold the hands of women patients as they go through the biopsy procedure.

Aventi added, “I think this (accreditation) validates the level of care we are providing to the community.”

“This is huge,” Silva said of the American College of Radiation recognition.  “This is not only representative of our community, but we have patients who come to us from out of the area.  We even have a managed care company that has approached us,” she said.

The Breast Imaging Center of Excellence accreditation is for a three year period came out of Reston, Virginia.  The achievement of high practice standards resulted from a peer-review evaluation conducted by board certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.

In their review the qualifications of the hospital personnel and the adequacy of the equipment used in the facility were all measured against state of the art values.
