Manteca junior Marcus Montano refused to let his Buffaloes end the regular season on a losing note during Wednesday’s Valley Oak League finale at Guss Schmeidt Field on Senior Night.

Montano scored the game-tying goal in the 78th minute that helped Manteca escape with a 2-2 tie over visiting East Union (3-9-2 VOL, 5-15-2 overall).

“(East Union) was able to capitalize on a couple of our mistakes in the back and we struggled to put the ball in the back of the net on our scoring opportunities,” Manteca head coach Justin Coenenberg said.

The Buffaloes’ Carlos Belmonte recorded the assist on the Montano score.

In the 12th minute Manteca (8-3-3, 16-3-4) took the game’s first lead on a score from Manuel Nuno. Kevin Rodriguez assisted the goal that made it 1-0, which was the score at the half-time break.

East Union came out and played solid in the second half and tied the game in the 49th minute. Sunny Hernandez Jr. tied the game at one apiece and Rigo Jauregui scored a go-ahead goal in the 66th minute that made it 2-1.

The Buffaloes outshot the Lancers 13-6 and got two saves from Abdiel Chiquito.

The Sac-Joaquin Section postseason tournament is slated to start Tuesday.

Kimball 3, Lathrop 2

Andreas Garcia finished with a goal and an assist during the Spartans’ 3-2 season-ending loss against Kimball on the Jaguars’ Senior Night.

Lathrop (4-6-4, 10-9-4) trailed 2-0 at halftime but used a goal from Vicente Lopez and Garcia in the second half to tie the game. Kimball (4-9-1, 4-13-3) scored the game-winner in the final 10 minutes of regulation.
