East Union High leadership students conducted canned food drives on two consecutive Saturdays benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank of San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties.

All told, Jenaia Torres, who is the school’s activities director, said her students gathered well over 200 food items.

Mike Mallory, CEO of the food bank, was overwhelmed by the effort.

“This means one more can to feed our less fortunate,” he said on Tuesday. “It also sends a message that people of a young age understand the importance of giving.”

Demand at the Second Harvest is up 30 percent from that of the previous year. The food bank, particularly with Thanksgiving and Christmas right around the corner, is gearing up for its busiest time of the season.

“Anything we get will complement and give the dinner the full variety,” Mallory said.

He praised the East Union leadership students.

“They get it – They’re showing that we should all do our part to help out,” added Mallory.
