A Saturday morning car thief apparently took his bicycle along just in case he needed a quick get-away – which he did when the owner caught up with him an hour later.

Manteca Police were called shortly before 7 a.m. when a resident reported her 2006 Toyota Scion was taken from in front of her residence in the 800 block of Virginia Street.

After officers took the stolen report, the owner of the car said she and family members were on their way to breakfast about 45 minutes later when she spotted her car backed into a parking stall at Taco Bell in the 400 block of East Yosemite Avenue.

She told police that they drove into the lot and confronted the person standing next to the car as he was removing a green bicycle from the vehicle.  “Hey, what are you doing?”  she told officers she shouted at him. He apparently recognized the woman as the owner – said he was sorry – and quickly rode off on his bicycle, she added.

The owners followed him across Yosemite Avenue and south on Sherman Avenue for two blocks seeing him disappear into the Shady Hollow trailer park at 317 Moffat Boulevard.

Sgt. Jody Estarzeau said the suspect was a white male with a dark goatee, with a lip ring.  She said he was of average build and believed to be in his 20s.  He was wearing a dark colored hoodie and jeans.  The bike was green and black appearing to have been spray painted.
