Manteca High’s girls tennis team ended a 20-year playoff drought in 2011.

Now, there’s another hump the two-time defending Valley Oak League champion Buffaloes must get over. They are one-and-done in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs once again, this time losing 8-1 to Solano County Athletic Conference runner-up Vanden in the second round Tuesday. Both teams were awarded first-round byes.

Last season, the Buffaloes were edged by then SCAC No. 2 seed Benicia, 5-4. They were eliminated in the opening round by Oakmont in 2011.

Individual matches were more competitive than the final team outcome indicates. Sophomore Allison Rachels accounted for Manteca’s lone point by defeating Keily Walker 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 in the No. 6 singles match. At No. 3 singles, Elizabeth Tolbert dropped a 4-6, 4-6 decision to Erika Rumbaoa. No. 2 Sealy McAdams (2-6, 5-7) and No. 5 Fechi Nkowcha (1-6, 5-7) nearly extended their matches but couldn’t come up with the clutch points in second sets.

Liz Diaz fell to SCAC singles titlist Kiwi McDaniel, 0-6, 1-6. Julia Saling was defeated by Kendrah Black, 1-6, 2-6.

The Manteca tandem of Katie Inderbitzin and Ashlee Miller looked to steal a doubles victory but came up short against SCAC champions Hailie Sheppard and Krystal Fogata, 5-7, 3-6. Jasmine Ellington and Kaitlyn Hoyer lost 2-6, 2-6, while Haylee Both and Monique Sandhu were blanked, 0-6, 0-6.

The season isn’t over yet for two Buffaloes, as VOL doubles runners-up Nkwocha and Rachels will compete in the section’s Division II individual tournament Thursday at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club. They will be joined by VOL singles champion Anna Cardenas of Sierra and Weston Ranch’s first-place doubles pair of Delarine Barut and Danica Ramos.
