It was once the Northern San Joaquin Valley’s top selling GMC dealership.

By this time next year it could be the largest indoor mini-storage facility in the area.

The Manteca Planning Commission on Tuesday will consider the conversion plans for the former Manteca Auto Plaza on the northeast quadrant of the 120 Bypass and Main Street interchange. The commission meets at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center, 1001 W. Center St.

Amerco Real Estate Co. of Phoenix bought the property a year ago for use as a U-Haul Rental Center.

The building will be reconfigured to provide 4,959 square feet of retail and office space. There will be 19,020 square feet of self-storage space in the area that once serviced vehicles. An additional 1,338 square feet well be used to perform maintenance on U-Haul vehicles. It will be at the rear of the building and won’t be visible from Main Street.

The applicant will enhance the façade of the steel building.

They also will install landscaping in a 10-foot wide strip along Main Street and the 120 Bypass that will include shade trees. Trees will also be incorporated elsewhere in the parking lot.
