MASL Fury takes second in under-19 girls tournament

The under-19 Fury of the Manteca Area Soccer League earned second-place trophies in the inter-league tournament on Nov. 10 at Northgate Park.

The Manteca Area Soccer League’s under-19 Fury girls placed second in the inter-league tournament on Nov. 9-10.

Fury began the tournament without a regular-season loss and continued its winning ways with two victories on Nov. 9 at the Arch Road Soccer Complex in Stockton. The final two rounds were played at Northgate Park the following day.

They were tested right away against the Stockton Bulldogs, as Carla Ochoa scored the only goal in a 1-0 win. Tyanne Woodyard-Smith was credited with the assist. Despite the narrow margin, Fury was in control of the match. The attack Stockton’s defense throughout and fired off 16 shots.

Goalie Kareena Escartin recorded five saves in the first of her two shutouts for the tournament. She was aided by the heads-up play of defender Taylor Gray.

Fury then met MASL rival Revolution and prevailed 2-0. Ivy Benson accounted for both goals, with Ruby Talavera assisting the second. The Manteca High sophomore joined the team in time after competing in the Sac-Joaquin Subsection Meet at Frogtown for her school’s cross country team.

Escartin again came up with five saves, and Kristen Robinson blocked a shot on a goal to preserve the shutout.

Fury unleashed its offense in Game 3, pummeling Stockton Hernandez, 7-2. Benson added four goals to her tournament total, while Jennifer Hoffman contributed two goals and an assist. Joanna Martinez chipped in a goal. Kaitlynn Tarango and Woodyard-Smith each had an assist.

Fury faced a squad from Tuolumne County Youth Soccer in the championship game, losing 2-0. Escartin racked up eight saves.
