The investigation is continuing into the exact cause of a solo accident in which a truck hauling 50 tons of rice straw plunged off the Clavey River Bridge Friday morning. The driver, Tyler Jennings Wilson of Manteca, 26, was killed.
The 2005 East Union High School graduate and his wife, Crystal, just had their baby Levi born on Nov. 1, . The young couple was married on July 21, 2012. He was a truck driver for HJW Hay, worked as a yard hand for Eden Garden Supply in Lathrop, and was formerly with the U.S. Coast Guard. He was the son of the owner of HJW Hay on Airport Way in Manteca. According to the California Highway Patrol, the truck which was a double-axle flatbed trailer, went off the Clavey River Bridge on Cottonwood Road in the Stanislaus National Forest. The truck plunged 150 feet into the riverbed below. The CHP spokesman said the accident caused the truck’s fuel tank to crack causing diesel fuel to leak into the river.
Wilson was reportedly working for Gigli Hay, Inc. in Lathrop which was under contract with the U.S. Forest Service to provide the rice straw needed for the reforestation efforts at the Rim Fire where thousands of acres of wilderness were reduced to ashes.
The rice straw was reportedly being used to mulch the devastated areas as well as to secure the charred areas from soil erosion during the winter, with helicopters being used to spread the straw.
