FRESNO — Sierra sophomore Josh Spooner recorded the best finish of the four local runners competing at Saturday’s CIF State Cross Country Championships at Fresno’s Woodward Park.

Spooner, who returned to state for a second straight year, finished 90th in Division III with a 16-minute, 53-second finish at the 5,000-meter course.

Spooner, who finished fifth at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III race to qualify, was chasing David Ulibarri’s school-record of 15:42 but came up short.

Manteca senior Harleen Pabla made her third straight appearance at state and finished 103rd in 21:12. It was a bit off her personal record of 19:15 at Woodward Park, which placed her at 45th last year.

Pabla won the VOL title this season and qualified for state in each of the last three years.

Also in the Division III girls race was Sierra junior Haley Silva (120th, 20:24), who was making her first appearance at the state championships.

In the girls Division IV race, Ripon sophomore Ellie Waters made her second straight trip and became the first female in school history to qualify in multiple years.

The section’s Division IV runner-up finished in 126th in 21:11, which was improvement from her 21:58, 144th-place finish at state as a freshman.
