Three area wrestling teams had rough season-opening duals Wednesday night.

East Union was the closest to coming away with a victory. In Stockton, the shorthanded Lancers were outlasted by St. Mary’s, 45-42, before losing to fully-loaded host Bear Creek, 44-27.

“We had four forfeits against Bear Creek’s full lineup,” East Union coach A.J. Reindel said. “Overall, we wrestled all right. It’s still early; we always do this in our first preseason match. Kids aren’t at the weights they are going to be at, so it’s tough to field our best lineup right now. There’s definitely a lot of work that needs to be done.”

East Union had some promising performances at the upper weights.

Mikey Villanueva won both of his heavyweight matches including one by pinfall. Nate Andrade stopped both of his opponents in the 220-pound division. Zach Fielding (152) grinded out two hard-fought wins. Jesus Vasquez competing up in weight at 160, earned a close decision win in the Bear Creek match.

McNair 36, Lathrop 18

Chavez 46, Lathrop 24

At McNair, Alex Garcia (132) was the lone Spartan to prevail in both matches. He pinned Chavez’s Louie Alicaba and outpointed Andy Huynh of McNair, 12-6.

Lathrop got two wins from two different wrestlers at 120 pounds. Against McNair, Josh Suarez dominated Autuymn Pacheco, 14-2. Drew Erwin took his turn against Chavez’s Daniel Khan and pinned his opponent in the opening period.

Omar Fernandez (220) and Manny Valium (160) each contributed a win.

Mariposa 48, Ripon 30

The Indians were not at full strength when they made the long trip to Mariposa on Wednesday but still had some strong individual performances.

Freshman Dyllan Heald (152), Brent White (138), Chris Fisher (132), Edgar Gonzalez (145) and Tristan Smith (220) all won via fall.

Reinforcements should arrive soon for Ripon as football players round into wrestling shape.
