Manteca should consider creating a homeless camp

Editor, Manteca Bulletin,

I would like to comment on several of the articles on the homeless that you have written and the times you have written about interacting with homeless people. I see them in various places in Manteca. From what I understand, some are homeless due to the economy and some don’t know how to interact with the traditional world. In many cases the limited number of shelters are not open to a large segment of the homeless because they are single males or they have pets.

There is one man I try to help on a regular basis. I asked him what he thought about your idea of a homeless camp. He liked the idea. I believe a camp would give them an important anchor in the world and could provide a way to help the homeless find jobs or help those with mental or medical conditions. Sacramento has a homeless camp and Modesto is thinking of setting up a place for the homeless too. Manteca should follow those examples.

Quite a few of the homeless, including the man I mention above, have dogs. His is a little dog, but many have larger dogs. The dogs aren’t just for protection, the dogs help keep them warm on these cold nights and may be their only companions and are their friends so it would be important to allow the dogs in the camps.

I am grateful to have food and a place to live. Hopefully, we can help provide a place where more of our homeless population can gain a little stability in their struggles to live on their own.
