The proof is in the pudding.

The pudding that Jeff Liotard quit eating in favor of a juice-heavy diet that helped him lose 100 pounds and gain a completely new perspective on health and what it means to be alive.

For more than a year, the Mountain Mike’s Pizza owner has been preaching the benefits of the simple – yet seemingly drastic – changes that he made after his daughter came home with a book that put his unhealthy lifestyle into context.

He’ll laugh and tell you that it was his mother-in-law’s poor attempt at cooking prime rib the day after Christmas that sent him on his healthy journey.

Whatever kicked it off, he wants to share it with the world through his newest endeavor, Mike’s Coffee, Raw Juicing and Sprits – a full-service juice bar and eatery that serves up everything from the vegetable-heavy mixtures that set-him off on his journey and ionized Kangen water to mixed drinks and cocktails.

And then there’s the food.

Liotard is quick to admit that he doesn’t mind cheating every once in a while – indulging in the butter-heavy clam chowder that his chef serves up or some of the other foods that would seem at odds with the lifestyle that he has committed himself to.

But for a guy who used to eat McDonald’s for all three meals and could down a large pizza in a single setting, cheating with a bowl of soup isn’t such a bad thing.

“Our chef is so amazing – the things that he’s able to do will blow you away,” Liotard said. “Bringing those kinds of good eats with healthy options like the juices that I started off with was something that I’ve wanted to do for a while.

“And people love it. We have regulars that come in like clockwork – there’s one guy who stops in every morning on his way to work and then pops in on his way home. It’s been great.”

Liotard’s initial plans were to open a bar next to the pizza joint that he has owned for nearly a decade, but he gave up the hard-partying ways that he said helped contribute to the unhealthy lifestyle that was going to likely lead to an early grave.

Now, the father of two has a completely different outlook. He firmly believes that sugar is the first drug that people get hooked on, and it should be prescribed just like anything else you get from a pharmacist.

And while people might not necessarily be ready to make the dramatic switch that Liotard did, just making small steps can make a world of difference.

“It wasn’t easy, but I think that I’ve inspired a lot of people,” he said. “Hopefully people can come down here and discover some of the benefits of what juicing and healthy eating habits can do. I think that I’m a pretty good example of that.”

Mike’s Coffee, Raw Juicing and Sprits is located at 1120 N. Main Street and is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information call (209) 823-7685.
