Cougars improve to 3-0, advance in tournament

Weston Ranch won every quarter aside from the third during Thursday’s 62-53 opening-round victory over Atwater at the Stagg tournament.

The Cougars (3-0) outscored the Falcons 32-24 in the opening half and were led by Teressa Hailey’s 14 points.

“It was one of those games where everything was off by a little bit,” Weston Ranch head coach Chris Bauer said. “But we played well enough to win. The kids kept their composure.”

A.J. Brown contributed 12, while Kelli Laughlin and Elisabeth Alexander netted nine apiece. Alayah Thomas added eight for Weston Ranch, which won despite 27 turnovers.

The Cougars play against the winner of Calaveras/Stagg tonight at 8 p.m.

Mt. Eden (Hayward) 47,
 Ripon Chr. 41

Sophomore Nichole Graham led the Knights with nine points, but that wasn’t enough to avoid a defeat in the opening round of the Liberty tournament in Brentwood.

Carly Tillema finished with eight points and eight rebounds. Amber Hilvers hauled in 13 rebounds to go with eight points. The game was tied at 35 after three quarters, but turnovers cost Ripon Christian (1-3).

Sierra 42, Pitman 31

The Timberwolves improved to 3-1 after topping the Pride in the first round of the Linden tournament. Sophomore guard Kayla Wilson finished with 18 points and Tiffany Harris hauled in 17 rebounds to go with eight points.

Sierra took a 23-12 lead into the break and closed with a 12-8 run over the last eight minutes. The T’Wolves face Linden in the second round today at 6:30 p.m.

Bret Harte 43, Lathrop 36

Lathrop went 5 of 21 from the free-throw line during a first-round loss at the Linden tournament.

Jamie Metcalf led the Spartans (0-3) with nine points and Loreal Taylor finished with eight points and 17 rebounds. Lathrop plays against Escalon today at 5 p.m.

Elk Grove 58, Manteca 32

Jessica Hasal led Manteca with 13 points in the opening round of the Lodi tournament. The Buffaloes will face Rocklin today at 5 p.m. in a consolation contest.

Excel 49, Edison 45

Letty Infante led Excel with 29 points, 28 rebounds and eight assists during a first-round victory at the McNair tournament.

SOPHOMORES

East Union 39, Ripon Chr. 28

Marcella Salyer finished with a team-high 14 points during the first round of the 14th Annual Camelot Classic hosted by East Union (4-0).

Jessica Pablo tallied 11 points and Jordyn Posz had six for the Lancers, who face Lathrop today at 8:15 p.m. at East Union in the second round.

Lathrop 35, Modesto 23

Terrina Phillips led the Spartans with 14 points and Delicia Higares and Paua Mora each added six during a first-round victory at the Camelot Classic.

FRESHMAN

Lathrop 45, Modesto 9

Gurveen Bal led Lathrop with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals during a first round victory at the frosh Camelot Classic hosted by East Union.

Danya Phillips registered 17 points, 15 rebounds, eight steals and five blocks.

Ripon Chr. 25,
East Union 19

Vanessa Cuellar (six points) and Julia Vigallon (five points) were the Lancers’ leading scorers during their opening-round loss at the Camelot Classic.
