Just three days after beating West High in the Lodi Tournament finale, Manteca met the Wolf Pack again on Tuesday with hopes of notching its second win of the season in the team’s home opener.

Brittney Reyes had other plans.

The sophomore wing fired 13 of her game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter, including the eventual game-winning shot with less than a minute to go.

Manteca, which had led the entire game, failed to convert on its final two possessions, as West escaped Winter Gym with a 40-39 victory. The win was the first of the season for the visitors from Tracy, who are now 1-6. The Buffaloes fell to 1-4.

“It’s all a learning environment for us,” Manteca coach Cody Norman said. “The score isn’t what we wanted it to be, but a lot of girls grew up on the court tonight and got valuable court experience.

Abby Behler and Jessica Hasal each had eight points to lead Manteca. Hasal, however, didn’t return after suffering an ankle injury early in the third.

In Tracy, The Lancers (2-2) rallied to score 19 points in each of the first and third quarters, but it was otherwise a sterling defensive effort. They held the Bulldogs (3-3) to single-digit scoring in every period.

“I liked our team defense, it was steady throughout the game,” East Union coach Jim Agostini said. “The girls got after it.”

Olivia Vezaldenos registered 16 points and six rebounds for EU. Post players Loretta Kakala and Anna Wood contributed 10 points apiece.

Nilo Yuson had 22 points for Lathrop (5-2), but it wasn’t enough to overcome the team’s 19 missed free throws and porous transition defense.

Nicolaus Obazuaye added 18 points, and T.J. Conley had 12.

The Pages improved to 6-1 behind Marcella Salyer’s 21 points and an overall defensive effort that produced 21 steals. Alissa Burrola chimed in with 10 points.
