There will be no San Joaquin County Fair in 2014.

On Wednesday the fair’s board of directors voted to suspend operations for a year to give it enough time to figure out how best to proceed during an era of shrinking revenue and bare-bones budgets.

Board President Joe Valente said that the operating budget for the upcoming fair would start them off in a $175,000 hole, and trying to recoup that is a roll of the dice that they aren’t willing to take at this point.

Livestock showing and sales would continue under a different umbrella, and live horse racing will continue during its regular summer run. San Joaquin is part of a series of Northern California horse races that are broadcast to off-track betting and live-wagering sites – a circuit that augments the existing thoroughbred horseracing meets.
