Vandals started a fire on Dec. 15 at the Northgate Park picnic shelter.

Parks staff inspected the area and found that vandals had broken off parts of the shade structure and set them on fire in the barbecue pit. They also took several nearby plastic garbage cans and threw them in the barbecue pit as well.

The flames and smoke charred the overhead support beams. Parks staff cleaned out the pit and ensured the remaining structure is sturdy and safe. Damage is estimated at $250.
