Weston Ranch went on a 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter Thursday to close a 20-point St. Mary’s lead to 11, but the Rams finished the game on a 10-1 run to defeat the host Cougars 62-42 in non-league boys basketball action.

“When I looked up with four minutes left we were only down by 11,” Weston Ranch coach Chris Teevan said. “And playing with four sophomores on the court the majority of the time, you have to feel pretty good about yourself.”

St. Mary’s (11-2) easily won the battle of the boards 30-19, but even more significant was the disparity in offensive rebounds with the Cougars (3-7) unable to get many second chances, grabbing just four to 15 for the Rams.

“We just didn’t rebound the ball well and that has been an Achilles heel of ours, but a lot of it is due to our size,” Teevan said. “We played extremely hard against a team that I consider to be one of the best in our area, along with Modesto Christian.”

Weston Ranch buried six from behind the arc with Jazz Swanson hitting two 3-pointers in the third quarter – both during an 8-0 run – to help the Cougars dig out of a 19-point hole. J’Son Moten also had a 3-pointer for Weston Ranch in the third period.

“We played against a very spirited group,” St. Mary’s coach Ken Green said. “I have to give a lot of credit to Weston Ranch.

“They really pushed us. I thought they did a really good job of spreading their offense and making us work and when it appeared like we had some control they made some big shots.”

Devin Williams and Gabriel Vincent of the Rams shared high-point honors with 19 apiece. Jaelen Ragsdale led the Cougars with 11 points followed by Jordan Tauga with eight and Swanson and Marcus Moore with six apiece.

Vincent led all rebounders with seven.
