LA-AREA MAN ARRESTED IN CHIHUAHUA'S RUN-OVER DEATH: HAWTHORNE  (AP) — A Southern California man is accused of killing his Chihuahua by deliberately hitting it with his car in an attack caught on surveillance video.

The Torrance Daily Breeze   says a resident found the dead animal Thursday.

Police investigated and found the video from Dec. 28 that shows a man in an alley removing something from his trunk of a car — possibly the dog. The Chihuahua then runs in front of the car, and the car runs it over before driving off. The dog is left convulsing and bloody.

Hawthorne police Lt. Scott Swain says investigators traced the car and arrested Michael Parker on Friday on suspicion of willful animal cruelty.

SANTA MONICA TO CONSIDER KEEPING PEACE SCUPLTURE: SANTA MONICA  (AP) — A sculpture warning of the horrors of nuclear war is getting its own bid for preservation.

"Chain Reaction" is a 26-foot-tall work representing chains tangled in the shape of a mushroom cloud. It was created by the late Paul Conrad, a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist.

The sculpture has stood at the Santa Monica Civic Center since 1991 but the city has raised concerns about its safety and approved its removal in 2012.

The Los Angeles   says a grass-roots effort raised $40,000 of what could be a $400,000 restoration job and City Manager Rod Gould says he'll recommend that the city cover remaining costs.

A City Council vote is scheduled for next month.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER TOW-YARD BREAKOUT, POLICE CHASE: EL MONTE  (AP) — Authorities say the owner of an impounded car smashed his way out of a Southern California tow yard and led police on a freeway chase before he was stun-gunned and arrested at an elementary school.

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune says 25-year-old Gerardo Martinez was arrested Monday in Pomona on suspicion of carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon and felony evading. It's unclear if he's obtained an attorney.

Police say Martinez drove his Mitsubishi Eclipse from an El Monte yard on Monday, knocking down the gate and leading authorities on a chase along two freeways.

Authorities say he tried to ram a Highway Patrol car and hit signs in Pomona before finally stopping and running onto a school campus, where he was shocked with a stun gun and arrested.
