LATHROP – Volunteers are being sought to help at the annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony to be held tonight starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Manuel Valverde Park.

The event is expected to attract a big crowd with holiday entertainment to be provided by several school choirs, and the group Lathrop Area Music program leading everyone in the singing of popular traditional carols and holiday songs.

Scheduled to take part in the evening’s entertainment are the choirs from Lathrop Elementary School, Lathrop High School and other local talents.

The community Christmas tree is located outside the Lathrop Community Center at Valverde Park where the tree-lighting will take place. The rest of the evening program will take place inside the community center where guests will have an opportunity to share a glass of cider or a cup of cocoa with friends and neighbors while nibbling on cookies.

Admission to the event is free. A “special guest” will also make an appearance that evening, announced Mayor Kristy Sayles during Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.

The lighting of the community’s Christmas tree kicks off the holiday season for Lathrop residents. The holiday celebration will kick into high gear on Saturday, Dec. 12, when the city holds its annual Festival of Lights Christmas parade starting at 5 p.m.

Valverde Park and the community center are located at 15557 Fifth Street just north of Lathrop Elementary School.
