WESTON RANCH — Weston Ranch High’s Tony Gomes lost a tough 6-4 decision in the first match at 171 pounds Thursday night.

The rest of the night belonged to the host Cougars.
Weston Ranch recorded eight victories by way of pinfall in its 66-6 season-opening shelling of Bear Creek.

“We’ve been working real hard since the summer, and I think conditioning played a factor for us,” Weston Ranch coach Pat King said. “It was a good, solid team effort, but there are some things we have to work on.”

Chris Contreras provided the big highlight for Weston Ranch. The natural 189-pounder moved up to 215 but didn’t let the weight disadvantage bother him as evidenced by his 18-second pin.

At 140, Joel Keough stuck his opponent with 2 seconds to go in the match.

Others winning by pinfall were Mark Dano (189) in 1 minute, 10 seconds, Matt Olmos (285) in 1:40, Daniel Guzman (112) in 0:58, Joe Anthony Gomez (135) in 1:40, Grant Mar (145) in 4:30 and Travis Bowen (160) in 1:18.

The Cougars got free points via forfeitures at 103, 125 and 152.

Weston Ranch expects more of a challenge at the Freedom Duals in Oakley Saturday.

“We’ll see where we stand there, because it’s a really tough tournament,” King said.
