Editor, Manteca Bulletin,

I probably should wait until I calm down, but I’m not going to. I am irate! I am irate at the “Christians” of Manteca, and those that may have to come to Manteca just to harass a small handful of freethinkers.

I was so excited to read in the Manteca Bulletin just a few days ago that there would be the first public meeting of atheists/freethinkers in Manteca since I moved here nine years ago!

So, why am I irate? It’s because the meeting’s discussion time was taken over by Christians/non thinkers. I don’t go to their churches and hog the discussion asking why they believe the stuff they believe! All of the many, many churches in Manteca and thousands and thousands of believers doesn’t satisfy them so they have to come and try to hog our tiny meeting of, oh, I guess maybe 50 freethinkers?

When I first drove up to the library I was shocked at the number of people gathered in front of the library, singing and praying and taking ALL of the parking spaces. I had been warned, but was still amazed at the hundreds of people that were so worried about 50 non-believers. That part was rather funny, particularly as they didn’t bother our meeting which was on the other side of the building. It was the 30 or so that came into our meeting, listened to the speaker (politely, I will give them that) but they hogged 90% of the discussion time asking the speaker questions he had already answered — just to argue.

All I ask is two hours once every two months to have an intelligent, meaningful discussion with like minded people. Is that so much to ask?
