East Union put itself in a solid position to steal a Valley Oak League victory on the road against struggling Oakdale Thursday night.

However, the Mustangs’ Austin Archuleta finished with the game-high 19 points and helped propel the Mustangs (1-3 VOL, 2-11 overall) to a 48-44 victory.

The officials whistled East Union (1-3, 8-7) for two technical fouls during the game’s final minute. The Lancers were up 44-43, but weren’t able to knock down their charity shots in the clutch.

“We missed free throws and turned the ball over,” East Union head coach Ryan Tarr said. “We were definitely in a position to win the game, and we just didn’t do it. Pretty disappointed with us defensively tonight.”

East Union, which will play against Weston Ranch Tuesday, received 12 points from three different players (Jake Danhoff, Drew Ruiz and Lucas Garcia).

Archuleta knocked down two key 3-pointers in the third quarter.

“We just lost track of him,” Tarr said. “We played well enough offensively to win the game, we just made poor decisions down the stretch and didn’t execute. Mental errors and lack of discipline lost the game for us.”

Will Collamer led Sonora (1-3, 7-8) with 23 points and missed the potential game-winning trey at the buzzer. Thomas Nelson added 14 against Manteca, which will bump heads with cross-town rival Sierra Tuesday.
