It just became a little bit easier to get to the Stockton Metropolitan Airport from Interstate 5.

The Sperry Road Extension Project – included is a one-mile stretch of elevated roadway between Performance Drive in the east and French Camp Road to the west – recently opened to motorists.

This cross-town route provides yet another option for those looking to connect to and from I-5 (South French Camp Road exit) and Highway 99 (Arch Road, westbound).

Construction on the Sperry Road Extension began in September 2011 and was made possible by Measure K – one-cent, voter-approved sales tax – state Proposition 1B Grant, and local funds (San Joaquin County and City of Stockton).

All told, the cost was $39.5 million.

Among the project features are a raised median and a sidewalk on the south side to accommodate pedestrians and bicycle riders.

The four-lane – two in each direction – span includes five new bridges over French Camp Slough, El Dorado Street, McKinley Avenue, and the three Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

In addition, new traffic signals are being installed at existing intersection of Performance Drive and Sperry.

According to the City of Stockton, a future alternative of this stretch could make Sperry Road into eight lanes.
